Filmmaker and studio mogul Tyler Perry is facing a new legal challenge after actor Mario Rodriguez filed a lawsuit accusing him of sexual assault and misconduct. The lawsuit, filed Thursday in California, marks the second legal action in recent months alleging that Perry abused his position of power in the entertainment industry.
Rodriguez, who appeared in the 2016 film Boo! A Madea Halloween, is seeking at least $77 million in damages. According to the complaint, Perry allegedly subjected him to repeated unwanted sexual advances over several years, including allegations of sexual battery and assault at Perry’s Los Angeles home. The details were first reported by the Associated Press.
The lawsuit also names Lionsgate, the studio that distributed Boo! A Madea Halloween. Rodriguez alleges the company ignored or failed to address Perry’s alleged misconduct. Lionsgate did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Perry’s attorney has strongly denied the allegations in a statement, rejecting the claims outlined in the lawsuit.
According to the complaint, Rodriguez alleges that his initial contact with Perry occurred in 2014, when a trainer at an Equinox gym in Los Angeles allegedly approached him and said Perry wanted his phone number to discuss a potential acting opportunity. The lawsuit claims Perry later encouraged Rodriguez to audition for Boo! A Madea Halloween, telling him he would be a valuable industry connection.
After Rodriguez was cast in the film, the lawsuit alleges he was invited to Perry’s home, where inappropriate physical contact occurred while the two were watching a movie. The allegations form a central part of Rodriguez’s claims of abuse of power and misconduct.
The lawsuit adds to growing legal scrutiny surrounding Perry, one of Hollywood’s most powerful figures, known for his work as a filmmaker, playwright, and founder of a major film and television studio. As of now, the case remains in its early stages, and no court rulings have been made.
